Chapter 349: Jin Canlan’s Purpose
Chapter 349: Jin Canlan’s Purpose
This actually left Lin Xinghai a bit stunned. "Those 100,000 Combat Robots we requisitioned... did you get all of them through your connections?"
"Ahem!" Jin Canlan cleared his throat. "Not exactly. But the number of Combat Robots requisitioned from Ruifeng Shelter was a full 50,000. My second brother really pulled out all the stops to get us that many."
"So you have an eldest brother, too? What does he do?" Lin Xinghai asked, a little curious.
"He’s serving in the military at another Shelter, but he’s only a lieutenant colonel right now. Who knows when he’ll ever make general. He’s no use, I’m better off relying on myself," Jin Canlan said with a pout.
Of course, Jin Canlan was dismissive, but Lin Xinghai understood that to any ordinary person, this was without a doubt a family of powerful officials.
The two made small talk, and a dozen or so minutes quickly passed. The Military Department acted swiftly, dispatching the team Lin Xinghai had requested in that short amount of time.
Even his Speed Mecha had been sent over by the Heaven-Sundering Mercenary Corps.
Soon, the massive team set out. A long convoy of over 30 Armored Vehicles left the sub-base, drove out of Guanghan City along the safe route, and then changed course, heading straight east.
The massive convoy traveled along a rugged highway. Even though the road was riddled with potholes, the Armored Vehicles’ performance allowed them to maintain a speed of over 120 kilometers per hour.
They could have gone faster, of course, but the ride would have been far too bumpy. This speed was just right to keep the occupants from being too uncomfortable.
Besides, at such high speeds, they could simply plow through any scattered groups of zombies that charged, posing no threat to the convoy at all.
Sitting in the constantly jostling Armored Vehicle, Lin Xinghai felt more bored than ever, but there was nothing to be done.
Time slowly ticked by. Finally, more than six hours had passed.
The convoy had traveled over 700 kilometers. At this point, Lin Xinghai, who had been seated the entire time, stood up, stretched his back, and limbered up.
They were finally about to reach the first danger zone.
This was the area they were scheduled to clear out.
Originally, Lin Xinghai’s plan was to not even get out of the vehicle unless a Mutated Zombie showed up. The task of clearing out the zombies could just be left to the soldiers.
However, after sitting in a vehicle for over six hours, the main thing he wanted to do now was get out and stretch his legs.
ROAR! ROAR! ROAR!
As the convoy drew closer, a cacophony of roars soon erupted.
Not far from the highway stood a sprawling complex of buildings, from which group after group of zombies poured out.
RAT-A-TAT-TAT!
But before they could even get close, a dense volley of gunfire erupted, swiftly mowing down the zombies one by one.
Simultaneously, the convoy slowly ground to a halt. Soldiers jumped out of the Armored Vehicles one after another and began to set up a temporary defensive position.
They would fight until no more zombies dared to show themselves.
Lin Xinghai had brought over 3,000 soldiers with him this time. With so many people gathered in one place, the resulting human scent was a fatal attraction for any nearby zombies.
Soon, the horde attacking their position visibly thickened.
However, Lin Xinghai paid the scene no mind. He pulled Liu Miaomiao from the vehicle, found a high vantage point, and gazed toward the distant city.
"Tongren City was just a minor city before the apocalypse, wasn’t it? I never expected it to be this large. It really makes me wonder how prosperous the world was before it all ended," Lin Xinghai mused, looking at the distant high-rises.
Liu Miaomiao gave Lin Xinghai a puzzled look. It wasn’t like he had never seen what the world was like before the apocalypse.
However, before she could voice her curiosity, she saw Lin Xinghai suddenly whip his head around to look in a particular direction, his face filled with confusion.
Following his gaze, she saw that Jin Canlan had gotten out of a vehicle at some point. He was holding a flare, which he had just launched.
This wasn’t a distress flare, but a positioning flare. They were generally used in the wilderness to signal one’s location after being separated from the rest of a team.
"Old Jin, what are you doing?" Lin Xinghai asked curiously as he walked over.
"Didn’t I mention I was going to see a relative? Tongren City is just over 100 kilometers from Ruifeng City, so we arranged to meet here," Jin Canlan explained.
"What? Why meet here? It’s not that far to Ruifeng City. We could’ve easily dropped you off after clearing out the zombies!" Lin Xinghai said, surprised.
"That would be too much trouble for you. It’s easier for them to just come to us," Jin Canlan said with a chuckle.
Just a few minutes later, Lin Xinghai saw a convoy in the distance rapidly approaching.
As they drew nearer, Lin Xinghai saw that it was a military squad of about a hundred soldiers.
After the soldiers disembarked, three more people got out. The man in the lead was a fatty, a spitting image of Jin Canlan. Lin Xinghai didn’t even have to ask to know that this must be Jin Canlan’s aforementioned second brother.
Beside him were a slender young woman and a teenage boy who looked to be about sixteen or seventeen.
Jin Canlan quickly went to greet them, and he began chatting with the family.
Before long, the other convoy departed, and Jin Canlan walked back with the teenager.
"Deputy Director Lin, this is my nephew, Jin Tong. He’s planning to take the entrance exam for East Sea Academy as well."
"I’m hoping you can lend him a hand during the combat assessment," Jin Canlan said with a chuckle, pulling Jin Tong forward.
Lin Xinghai was left speechless. ’No wonder this Fatty Jin insisted on coming along for no reason,’ he thought. ’So this is what he had up his sleeve!’
’Elder Wei insisted on waiting until I got to East Sea Academy before he’d cash out his assets to buy critical supplies, and now Jin Canlan is dumping his nephew on me. It’s like everyone is just shoving their problems my way!’
"Alright, fine. Just make sure you take good care of my two Mercenary Corps," Lin Xinghai said after a moment’s thought, finally agreeing.
It wasn’t a huge deal to help out, and he didn’t mind much. More importantly, he had to give Fatty Jin some face, considering the man was in charge of all the Mercenary Corps.
"Hehe, absolutely, I’ll take care of it," Jin Canlan said, hastily patting his plump chest.
Only then did Lin Xinghai turn his attention to Jin Tong. Seeing the boy’s naive expression, he couldn’t help but ask, "How old is this nephew of yours?"
"He just turned 16 this year," Jin Canlan said.
Although Lin Xinghai had suspected as much, the answer still shocked him a little. "You’re sending him to the battlefield at such a young age?"
That’s right. Attending East Sea Academy was effectively the same as enlisting. Though it was called an academy, it had no shortage of practical combat courses that required students to go onto the battlefield and fight zombies for real.
That was something even many adults couldn’t stomach.
After all, wasn’t it obvious that even with the generous compensation offered to soldiers and Mercenaries in the Shelter, very few people were actually willing to join up?
