Chapter 1149 - 1138: Valuing Daughters Over Sons
Seeing her mother-in-law with a look of anticipation mixed with fear of rejection, He Xixian felt a twinge in her heart. She sighed inwardly but kept her smile unchanged, "Of course, you are Lin Lin’s grandmother. It’s only natural for you to visit Lin Lin."
"His name is Lin Lin!" Han Hui murmured softly, and then followed He Xixian carefully, as if she was afraid of waking the child.
Mrs. He watched from behind, gently shaking her head. Her mother-in-law looked pitiful too, but why be like this in the first place? To be so heartless to her own son and grandson, people say even if parents don’t like their kids, they love their grandchildren unconditionally. But her in-laws hadn’t even cared in the two years since their grandson was born. Now they regret it, thinking it can make up for everything?
He Xixian and Han Hui entered the room just as the child woke up. He didn’t cry or fuss; seeing his mom made him smile with squinted eyes and reach out to be held, melting He Xixian’s heart.
Han Hui watched her grandson without blinking, seeing the resemblance to her son and his adorable smile. Her heart softened, but when the child looked at her curiously, she felt a surge of indescribable emotions.
The grandson was clearly growing up in a loving environment, his smile radiant. Even when seeing this stranger he had never seen before, he wasn’t resistant.
"Lin Lin, this is Grandma," instructed He Xixian softly.
"Grandma?" Lin Lin tilted his head, apparently baffled by this new term.
But Han Hui responded excitedly, "Yes?"
She reached out to hold the child but retracted her hand awkwardly, fearing her daughter-in-law might object, and looked at He Xixian pleadingly.
Inside, He Xixian felt uncomfortable. Where was this mother-in-law when she was pregnant and giving birth? Who is this pitiful act for now?
But regardless of her and her mother’s feelings, she couldn’t deny the child his grandmother, even though his grandmother had once tried to split her and her husband apart.
"Lin Lin, do you want Grandma to hold you for a bit?" she gently asked the child, then handed him over to Han Hui as he looked on in wonder.
Han Hui once helped her daughter Ye Qing with her child for a few months, so she knew how to hold a child comfortably. Lin Lin didn’t resist her; she was overwhelmed with joy, nearly in tears.
The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law brought the child to the living room. When Ye Peilin saw his grandson, he was just as excited as Han Hui and didn’t know how to express it.
Mr. and Mrs. He couldn’t bear to see them like this. Who wouldn’t be angry? At their daughter’s wedding, the groom’s family sent only two young people, a point relatives criticized them for repeatedly. Luckily, their son-in-law was competent enough not to make them look too bad.
Now, when their daughter caused a whole series of outrages, couldn’t they see the good in their son? Did they want to come directly to claim the fruits? Mr. and Mrs. He, who had long bonded with their grandson, absolutely wouldn’t allow them to take him back. It’s okay to see the child, but not to take him away.
But these harsh words were only in their thoughts. After all, they were the child’s biological grandparents. However, what mattered most was Ye Qiu’s attitude, something they found both comforting and worrisome.
"Lin Lin, this is Grandpa." With a gentleness she never reserved for Ye Qiu, Han Hui addressed her grandson.
Ye Peilin was also nervous, "Lin Lin, I’m Grandpa."
They both looked at the child expectantly, but he remained silent, then suddenly reached for He Xixian, saying, "Mommy, Mommy."
He Xixian, unconcerned about her father-in-law and mother-in-law’s awkwardness, took her son in her arms, breathing a sigh of relief. In the end, her thoughts aligned with her parents’; since there wasn’t a close bond before, there was no need to forge one now.
"Dad, Mom, Lin Lin hasn’t seen you before. Don’t take it to heart," said He Xixian with an apologetic smile.
Han Hui and Ye Peilin’s hands hung still for a while before they spoke with a hint of self-blame, "The child hasn’t met us before. It’s normal. This is good too, better than going off with a stranger."
"Yes, it’s good," Ye Peilin echoed awkwardly, then reminded Han Hui, "Didn’t you buy something for the child? Take it out."
Han Hui hurriedly rummaged through her bag and solemnly took out a few small boxes, "I know Lin Lin doesn’t lack anything, so I bought these according to tradition."
Looking inside, He Xixian saw a small gold bracelet, a small golden pig, and what was evidently a set of adult-sized gold jewelry.
"The bracelet and little gold pig are for Lin Lin. The jewelry is for you, Xianxian. We realized too late that we wronged you in many ways. We don’t seek your forgiveness, only that you accept these," Han Hui spoke with her head bowed lower, "We and Ye Qiu’s father know you don’t need these things now. It’s just a small gesture from us."
Watching the couple’s guilty demeanor, Mr. and Mrs. He couldn’t bear it and turned to the kitchen to cook. Things had reached this point, and there was little they could say. Although the past grievances couldn’t be easily forgiven, everything depended on their daughter and son-in-law’s decision.
"Dad, Mom, I heard from Ye Qiu that sister isn’t doing well. Why waste money buying these for us?" sighed He Xixian, unsure of what to say.
But her offhand dismissal only deepened Han Hui and Ye Peilin’s awkwardness. If not for their daughter, why had they fallen out with their son and daughter-in-law in the first place?
It was true that they had devoted everything to their daughter once, neglecting their son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. Their daughter-in-law had every reason to think this way.
"No need. We meddled too much in Ye Qing’s affairs, causing her to develop some misconceptions, leading us to make many mistakes. We won’t interfere with her life anymore; it’s time she matured."
"Is that so?" He Xixian was at a loss for words, "But you’re getting older. There’s no need to buy such expensive things; Ye Qiu likely won’t accept them either."
Thinking about their son, Han Hui and Ye Peilin panicked, fearing another dispute should he show up. They hastily got up, "These are just our small token. We’ve bought them already, so just keep them. It’s getting late. We won’t keep you any longer. These are just greeting gifts for the child; there’s no reason to take them back. Lin Lin, Grandpa, and Grandma will visit you next time."
"Leaving so soon? Won’t you wait for Ye Qiu to come back? Stay for dinner!" urged He Xixian.
"No, we have other matters," replied Han Hui as she and her husband left. They paused at the door one last time, softly saying, "Xianxian, we wronged you and the child’s grandfather in the past; we are sorry."
He Xixian was taken aback, then comforted them, "It’s okay. It’s all in the past. I don’t mind. Ye Qiu treats me well."
"As long as you’re happy..."
