Chapter 112: Heart To Heart
Chapter 112: Heart To Heart
Clementine pondered on what to do, she knew she had to go see Mariam so she could know the jobs available but she wanted to keep Rachel and her little sister safe as she didn’t trust Allison just yet.
"Rachel, can I talk to you alone for a minute?" Clementine requested, these two haven’t spoken a lot so Rachel was sort of surprised about this.
She didn’t consider Clementine a friend but whatever she had to say must be important.
Rachel nodded and they both walked outside of the house with no one thinking too much of it.
"What’s wrong?" Rachel asked Clementine, she was genuinely curious because this had to be a first.
"I want to know what you think about this place..." Clementine blurted out.
"I think it’s too good to be true but at the same time, I want to believe that things can go back to the way it was before the world fell," Rachel responded.
"That’s the thing, trying to preserve what was only makes people a lot weaker. They need to adapt to what is," Clementine said.
She had studied the people around and knew that they weren’t equipped to handle the world outside and this made them a liability.
The community was also fairly new, it was clear that these people were residents here before the world fell and they chose to remain here.
"I think sometimes we just need to enjoy what is before us without questioning it. I think this is a good place for my little sister, she has been exposed to so much shit already that I just want her to have a normal life," Rachel was passionate, she knew what she wanted for her sister.
"But normal doesn’t exist anymore. I’m going to leave you all soon and I want to do so knowing you’re safe." Clementine expressed her concern.
She is in the military and knows the potential of granting people too much power because all it took was one bad egg with a gun to turn this place upside down.
"I appreciate your concern but we aren’t your responsibility, you have done more than enough for us already. We couldn’t have asked for more but I think it’s time to put yourself first." Rachel said sternly, her voice was full of appreciation but also resolve.
Clementine sighed, she had been in the military for quite some time and ensuring the safety of civilians was almost like second nature to her.
"I understand, it isn’t in my place but I fear that Jason is biting more than he can chew. He won’t survive out there," Clementine said and she noticed Rachel’s demeanor change.
"W-Why do you say that?" Rachel questioned.
"Jason is kind but Sam was right, Sam has always been right. There is no kindness in the world we’re in right now," Clementine answered her question.
"I don’t agree, I wouldn’t be here if he didn’t protect me even after I screwed him over nor will my sister. Neither would Bella and it is only because of his kindness that we’re all here today," Rachel countered.
"And what do you think would happen to Jason if he was to lose one of you?" Clementine tossed the question up in the air.
"What do you mean?" Rachel didn’t know what she was driving at.
"Loss, the power of loss is a terrifying thing. The more you feel, the harder it hits. And I don’t believe Jason would survive," Clementine got to the point.
"You need to watch over him, Rachel. Some people will take advantage of his kindness and that is why you’re the only one that can watch over him. It is just like I did with Sam until..." Clementine paused, she was still shaken that Sam had discarded her like some unwanted toy.
"Why me? Everyone in that room has his best interest at heart," Rachel said.
"You know why, Rachel. You know why..." This was all Clementine said and this brought an end to the conversation.
"Speak of the devil," Clementine muttered, Jason just came into view with a rather intimidating woman, Rachel’s eyes softened the moment she saw him.
It took up to five minutes until Jason reached where they stood, they looked at the lady that was with him with suspicion.
"Hey Jason," Rachel greeted.
"Hey you," Jason responded but he soon cleared his throat when he realized that Debra was with him, he needed to maintain his frame.
"I have been accepted and with that, my starter package is a better and bigger house. I wanted to ask if you girls will be interested in staying with me or would rather stay here in this... dump," Jason was feeling boastful today.
"Look who has gotten cocky," Rachel teased Jason but Jason only smirked awkwardly in response.
He was surprised that such words came out of his mouth but he was going to ride with it.
"Why is she with you?" Clementine asked.
"Forgive me for not introducing myself, I go by the name Debra. Nice to make all of your acquaintances," Debra was respectful despite her looks giving the opposite impression.
"You’re one of the people that go above the wall?" Clementine wanted to confirm who she was to which Debra nodded.
"Indeed I’m one of them," Debra responded. She noticed that Clementine had a certain intensity about her.
"I’m down!" A voice rang out behind the door, it was Lillian.
"Lillian? How long have you been there?" Rachel asked, she wanted to know how much her younger sister heard.
"You don’t need to worry about me," Lillian said in a suggestive tone that told her older sister that she had heard everything
"Who said I wanted you to tag along? Beat it punk," Jason dismissed Lillian but she ignored everything he said, holding his hand.
"What are you doing?" Jason asked her.
"Lead the way dipshit!" Lillian said and Jason couldn’t help but snicker.
"This must be what it’s like having a younger sister..." Jason blurted out.
"Ha! I would be the one with the good genes in the family because..." Lillian paused, looking at the bigger man from head to toe.
"You definitely aren’t the one with them," Lillian roasted him and even Debra couldn’t hold in her giggle. Jason looked at Debra and she quickly tried to compose herself but this only made her laughter worse.
"I’m sorry but she got you good," Debra confessed but Jason rolled his eyes.
Rachel couldn’t help but smile because this was the first time she had seen Lillian genuinely happy, ever since that incident that forever changed both their lives.
Lillian felt safe with Jason, a feeling that has eluded her most of her life.
"Well, are the rest of you coming or am I only taking this little runt with me?" Jason asked.
Clementine knew it was best they stayed separate, she had seen the size of the other houses.
There was no way they would all get their rooms, meaning they would have to share and she for one wouldn’t want to hear Jason fucking someone from the other room.
"I think we ladies best stay here or the others in the community might feel cheated," Clementine suggested.
She wanted to fit in and she knew the best way was not to stand out.
They had to blend in and live like the rest of the pack, at least for now.
"You sure? I think we should stick together just in case of anything," Jason tried to convince her but Rachel agreed with Clementine, they needed to have their privacy.
They were ladies and Jason was a man that had fucked half of them and he was going to be busy, he didn’t need the distraction.
"We are sure even though I don’t think Lillian shares our decision," Clementine responded.
"I don’t? This just means I have two houses. Besides, I want to see the house this dipshit chose," Lillian said but Rachel was becoming skeptical.
"Lillian, are you sure?" Rachel asked, her voice filled with concern.
Lillian looked at her older sister and a big smile crept up on her face, it reminded her of a simpler time and she was glad that Jason could bring this side of her younger sister.
"I’m certain!"

Sam drove and drove, he knew he had to get to base as soon as possible.
They were no longer responding to him so something must have happened.
Sam was glad that he had extra gas with him or he wouldn’t have been able to make this journey.
Sam looked distressed, he was anxious as he didn’t know what it could have been to make the base lose contact with him.
This shouldn’t have happened and Sam couldn’t help but think of the worst case scenario.
Sam wouldn’t arrive until nightfall and that was if he didn’t encounter any obstacle before then.
"I have a fucking bad feeling about this!" Sam thought out loud as his vehicle tore through the street.
