Chapter 254: A Bargain
Chapter 254: A Bargain
Clementine was taken away and she was glad that she had made progress regarding this but she was cautious.
This man didn’t feel like the rest of them, he felt like a true military man who couldn’t be messed with; however, she also knew she had to maintain her disguise.
"Where are we going?" She asked, curious because they had been walking for quite some time and she noticed that a few soldiers were escorting them.
This told her that despite her gender, this man wasn’t one to underestimate anyone which told her he was on the smart side.
She noticed that he was leading her into a warehouse but there was no way he would execute her in cold blood because it would raise questions if she didn’t return.
"The act of war is an act of freedom..." The dark-skinned man responded, this was random but Clementine knew she would find out a lot more if she kept her mouth shut.
"An act of freedom is an act of transgression..." The man continued but this sounded a tad bit extreme.
"Nature is fighting man for its freedom, it wishes to return to a state before man corrupted it," The man blurted out, it was clear that he believed what was happening was a product of nature revolting.
".. But in doing so, it has only guaranteed its destruction," The man grinned before the door to the warehouse opened, Clementine didn’t know how to feel about this but this man was not okay upstairs and she knew it wouldn’t be in her best interest to be on his bad side.
She had to tread carefully, there was no telling what he would do if she did anything that he deemed threatening.
"Ha, but aren’t we the ones that revolted against nature? The pollution, the cutting down of trees, the hunting of animals, the list goes on," Clementine responded, trying to engage him in an otherwise simple conversation.
The man was surprised by her response because he was used to everyone just nodding or keeping quiet. After all, they feared to disagree with him.
"I understand how you would make that distinction but how did we come to be?" He asked, pausing, looking at Clementine as she realized that the place he had led her into was a warehouse filled with weapons and ammunition.
She couldn’t believe how much there was, it was enough to equip an entire army, this should be impossible even for the military.
However, she had to keep her cool and focus on the conversation even though she was curious as to why they had so many.
"God?" She responded, not sure of the answer he sought.
"That is wrong, what if I told you nature was the thing corrupting earth and we were put on it to put an end to its plague? But by doing so, we became a plague ourselves so the next creature has come into existence to get rid of us," The man said sternly.
The more he spoke, the crazier he sounded but there was some sense in what he was saying from a more spiritual point of view.
This had to be the first man that has had such a view and probably, the only one.
"That is an interesting take," Clementine responded with a look of astonishment.
"Now tell me..." The man said, picking up a pistol that lay on the table.
Clementine’s body tensed up because she didn’t know what was about to happen but surely, there was no way this man had any intention of killing her.
"Why is a soldier pretending to be a civilian?" The man asked and Clementine’s heart sank.
She instinctively moved to try and disarm him but the man moved back with the pistol in hand.
There was something about his agility, Clementine was surprised that he was that fast.
But she didn’t have time to do anything else and she had given herself away in the process.
"How did you know?" Clementine asked and the man smiled.
"The way you walked, your body language but more importantly, I have seen you," The man responded but this made Clementine cautious.
There was no way that this man could have seen her, this must be a trap and Clementine knew that everything he had said might be a ruse.
She had to save face.
"A soldier? Me? Hahahaha!" Clementine burst out laughing but the man didn’t seem amused by this.
"I thought you were going to kill it and my self-defence lesson kicked in! I’m sorry," Clementine denied it.
"Clementine, you’re looking for Sam, aren’t you?" The man said and Clementine felt her heart stop for a second because this man not only called her name but he also knew who Sam was.
"... Or am I mistaken?" The man questioned, there weren’t too many blue-eyed mixed ladies running around in the military.
Clementine stood out in that regard when news about the attempted violence that was attempted on her despite the higher-ups’ best efforts to keep it under wraps.
This man was among the soldiers in that camp before he relocated but he knew who Clementine was but there was no way in hell that he wouldn’t know Sam.
Clementine had an unhealthy attachment towards Sam and he could now use that information to his advantage.
"What do you know?" Clementine asked and the man smiled, he was glad that she was no longer putting up the facade.
"I know that Sam is still alive," The man informed her and this got Clementine’s full attention.
"WHERE!?" Clementine exclaimed but she knew that she was playing right into his hands.
"Not so fast, I need you to do something for me. It is something that only you can do," The man pointed out, Clementine was expecting a bargain of this sort.
"What do you want from me?" Clementine asked but the man was in no hurry to reveal it.
"You will know in due time but for now, you must behave or I will make sure you never find Sam again," The man said and Clementine knew what he meant by this.
He was going to kill her and something told her this wasn’t a bluff, she could tell by the look in his eyes.
